Beer on the Beach at Galway

Ireland Day 2 Galway

Location: Galway
B&B: Prague House
Attractions: Town Center, Beach, Lighthouse, The Quays Bar
Beer of Choice: Heineken

We got out of bed around 8am and Eilish made us a delicious traditional Irish breakfast. Bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, toast, croissant, orange and apple juice and great coffee. Shane would go on to rave about the croissant the rest of the trip. Traditionally, there would be black pudding too, but after finding out what that was, we passed on it. We met another couple at breakfast from England. They were in town for the Chili Pepper’s concert.

After Breakfast, we packed up and headed to Galway. We took the Motorway which was a Dual Carriageway. We figured out how to connect our Renault 4 door rental car to our phone for music and played Ed Sheeran’s “Galway Girl” for most of the drive.

We arrived at the Prague House in Galway at about 1:30pm and were greeted by the host and informed about the town and attractions. It was a 5 minute walk into town and a 5 minute walk to the beach. Our first stop was to the town center for a bite and a pint. We stopped at The Bunch of Grapes where Jill had her first of many Irish coffee’s on the trip, and Shane decided to try a Heineken since the tapper was so cold it had frost built up around it. Heineken is a pretty darn good beer when it is fresh and doesn’t have an aftertaste of a skunk’s butt. We ordered some food here, Jill had the grilled ham, cheese, tomato and onion (Grilled Special), and Shane the chicken salad sandwich.

After a bit of souvenir shopping, we headed back to the B&B to grab our coats for a walk on the beach. We of course stopped by a local liquor store for a few beers to throw in our backpack too.

The beach was covered in seaweed and more seashells then I’ve ever seen at a beach. We walked along the beach enjoying the setting sun and trying to find inconspicuous places for Shane to relieve is pea sized bladder. We headed down Muttons Causeway thinking we’d be able to take a closer look at the lighthouse at the end, only to find out it was gated up due to the sewage treatment plant that shares the same address. On our way back, Jill spotted some Seals swimming nearby. We attempted a picture, but they were pretty far out.

We headed back to the B&B to freshen up and prepare for a night out. Our first stop was The Front Door for some pints and conversation. The bar tender let us know of some good places to eat and live music. We landed on 56 Central for dinner; Jill had the seafood chowder and Shane the Cajun chicken burger and shared profiterols for dessert.

With our belly’s full, we sought out some live music. Thanks to a tip from a friend back home, who was just in Galway, we headed to The Quays Bar. We found a table right behind the stage. Great Music! We met 4 people from Iowa oddly enough, and spent the rest of the night drinking, jamming and even danced a little. It was an amazing day.
