We woke up and had our last complimentary breakfast at the resort and headed off to the airport to catch our flight to Kauai. We were officially done living the posh life and heading to our new adventure on the Garden Island.

Arriving in Kauai

One of the first things I noticed when we started driving away from the airport was the how green everything was in comparison to The Big Island. Kauai is one of Hawaii’s oldest islands and The Big Island is it’s newest, so there were no black fields of dried lava rock. Only luscious green vegetation everywhere. Well… vegetation and chickens. I’m not sure why there are so many chickens on Kauai, but all the vegetation comes from the abundance of rain and sunshine that the island gets. From what our driver told us, it is the rainiest place in the United States.

Our driver was a super nice guy that gave us a wealth of information as he was taking us to our vehicle/home for the next few days. He told us the best traffic routes, the best places to eat, and fun things to do while we were staying on the island. If you need a ride when on Kauai, look up Ron the Kauai Wizard.

Our Truck/Tent

This part of our trip included a bit of “roughing it”. We rented a Toyota Tacoma Truck that had a topper on the back and a tent above the topper. It was really a pretty sweet setup. Once we figured out how everything worked, we were off to find our first camping spot of the trip. We decided to stay close to where we picked the truck up so that we didn’t have much driving time and could enjoy the day for a bit. The Kumu Camp was right next to the beach and although the facilities weren’t much to talk about, being next to the ocean and a nice beach made this campground totally worth it.

For dinner, we found a local grocery store and bought some cheese, meat, and crackers along with a few drinks to have on the beach. After our grocery run, we went for a walk on the beach with our camping chairs and just chill-axed for a bit. We found a cool spot tucked among some drift wood and vegetation. As we sat there, we noticed some sand would get thrown out of small holes on the beach every once in a while. It took us a bit to realize there were tiny crabs in the holes, make their living space a little bigger.

Campfire

As we walked around the campsite and beach area, I noticed a plethora of wood that had washed up on the beach or had been cut down in the campground. They were doing some work around the campground and had taken down several trees and were nice enough to chop it up into campfire sized logs.

So we each cracked an adult beverage and I got to work. I didn’t have a ton of paper, so I rationed what I had, thinking I might need to take a few cracks at getting it started. The big wood was still pretty green but I thought the drift wood would be enough to ignite it. After three failed attempts, I was ready to give up. I guess starting a fire in a rain forest isn’t all that easy. Luckily I found a citronella oil lamp and placed it under my slightly charred wood tee-pee. It was the jump my fire needed and we had a blazing fire to sit next to while we ate our cheese, meat, and crackers. I wanted to get up and take a picture of the fire, because it was that good, but decided to just live in the moment and take it all in mentally instead.

It was long before we retired to our tree-house-like tent and slept to the sounds of the ocean.
