We woke up and took a walk on the beach, looking for seashells and dodging waves as they rolled in. The sun came up over the ocean, and painted the clouds pink and orange. We couldn’t really see the sun, but the effect it had on the clouds as it’s light refracted through them made for a beautiful sunrise.
Our original plan was to take an excursion on a motor powered raft along the Napali Coast and travel along the cliffs and into caves, but as you may have seen in my last post, because the surf was up, we would have gotten the crap beat out of us by the massive waves that were coming in on the north side of the island. So we decided to check out areas in Kauai that we thought sounded interesting.
Opaeka’a Falls

The first attraction on our list was a waterfall that we were able to drive to. We punched it in the GPS and headed up a winding road to a small parking lot with about 13 chickens in it. We ate some breakfast there and the chickens thought they were going to get some and started flocking. Once we got a little food in our bellies, we headed over to the wall keeping tourists from falling to their death and peaked over to see the beautiful waterfall. We don’t have stuff like that in Iowa. We enjoyed the view for a bit and made our way back to the truck and down the winding road.
Poipu Beach, Spouting Horn, Lawa’i Beach
Our next stop was the beautiful Poipu Beach. We set up a nice cozy place in the sand and Jill rested in the sun while I explored the water to see what kind of fish were around. After a bit of swimming with the fishes, I came back to get my beautiful bride and we both snorkeled for a bit. We took a break on the little island off the beach and found a Monk Seal sunbathing in the sand. We met a super nice couple there that tipped us off to another hot snorkeling area and decided to go check out Lawa’i Beach.
Before we tried the different snorkeling location we wanted to check out the Spouting Horn, a hole in the top of a cave that spouts like a whale when the waves crash against it. It was just okay. Nothing too amazing.
Garden Island Grill
By this time we were super hungry and decided to find a place to sit down and eat, instead of our usual food truck lunch. We found some businesses in a strip mall location that had some restaurants and started our hunt for a place to eat. We settled on Garden Island Grill, got some fruity drinks and ordered some food. There was some funny little lizards that were licking on a cherry on the railing next to us. Jill got the fish tacos and I got fish and chips. The fish and chips was okay, but I wished I would have gotten something else. The location was cool though and Jill loved her tacos.
Waimea Canyon
Our next stop was the Waimea Canyon Lookout. We drove up another super winding road to arrive at an incredible vista of a canyon with hills all around and a tall waterfall off in the distance. It was a nice little stop on our way to Polihale Beach and I’m glad we got to see it.

The Road to Polihale Beach
This is where the video I’ve embedded at the bottom started. The trip to Polihale was quite the adventure. We drove through some beautiful areas with trees tunneling the road. It was a nice drive and when we got to the B-Level road, we were ready to get out and stretch our legs. Little did I know that we still had about and hour worth of driving left! This 5 mile road that leads to the beach is thee roughest road I have ever been on. There were potholes on potholes on potholes. I could barely get the truck up to 5 miles an hour before the ride became uncomfortable.
It was worth it though. Once we got to the beach, we drove around in the less bumpy, but more sandy roads to find a camping spot and found a really nice one right above the beach. There was a gorgeous cliff to our right with a rainbow that just seem to hang out there forever, and an amazing sun set to our left. It was the best sunset of the trip and I felt it was the cherry on top of this great trip.
