Costa Rica Day 6
Date: March 1st
Today was a non-travel, non-excursion day, so we woke up when we wanted and started our day how we wanted. This day in particular was a great morning for watching the trees in the jungle while sipping coffee. Right away we saw some monkeys playfully jumping around in the trees. We were guessing it was a family or clan coming through foraging for food before the heat of the day. We found a nest knocked over on our patio with a couple of broken eggs and were wondering if it was from the monkeys. There were birds dive-bombing them as they made their way through the trees, strengthening that theory.
A beautifully colored toucan with yellow and black markings also visited us. There were other birds around making noises I’ve never heard before as well. It was so entertaining being out on that patio around sunrise and sunset, seeing all the different animals that we don’t have back in Iowa.
After a very enjoyable bird watching session, we decided to check out the local farmers market in Uvita. The market was held in a shelter over a soccer field with fake turf and nets along the outside to keep ball from going way off the pitch. There were vendors set up throughout the field. Some selling jellies and jams, nicknacks and jewelry, paintings and carvings, cookies and baked goods, fruit and fresh juice, and even frozen fish.
We met a nice little dog there that didn’t seem to have an owner nearby. I’ve noticed that hardly anyone in Costa Rica keeps their dogs on a leash. Most just run free and do a good enough job of staying out of trouble. That is probably why we were visited by our buddy “Burrito” almost every day at Case Futura (our Air BnB). Burrito is a dog I’ve mentioned in other posts that reminded us of a dog named “Taco”, a friend of ours’s dog back in Iowa. Charlie took the opportunity to have a photoshoot with him so she could remember that precious face after we had come back to the states. 😀
After we purchased some cookies, freshly squeezed juice, a pineapple, and jewelry for Jill, we headed back “home”. We just hung out by the pool most of the day. Jill convinced Charlie to have a photoshoot of us in the pool so we could remember the beautiful view we had. She was a pretty good sport until Jill asked for one of us smooching… ick!
For dinner, we wanted to go to a nice restaurant with a view and Jill delivered once again by picking Mirador Don Roger. It was just up the road from us but gave us a view of Whale Tail Beach that we hadn’t seen previously. And I think this was the best sunset we had the whole time we were there. The outdoor seating at the restaurant provided the perfect vista of the beach and sun setting over an ocean speckled with surfers. Mattix and I went out towards the grassy area to get away from the spider that he found in the rafters near us and a better view of the ocean. There was a pineapple plant that they let grow like a bush. I don’t think I’d ever seen one quite like it.
As the sun set, the view just got more colorful and vibrant. Pinks and purples mixed with oranges and reds. We took a ton of pictures as we sipped our drinks and waited for our food. Our server was very kind and friendly, but the food was just okay. I got a seafood pasta that seemed to have more shells and non-edible stuff than edible and Mattix requested his burger plain, and it had all the fixings on it. But the view made any food mishaps negligible.
We headed “home” in the dark after we drank in every last drop of that sunset. We didn’t stay up very late that night because tomorrow… we zipline.
